Vocations’ Office

Fr. Richard Bomera Vocations Director

Fr. Richard Bomera Vocations Director

The Vocations’ office is at the forefront of training future priests. As such, it is concerned with the recruitment and training of candidates to the priesthood.

As pertains to recruitment, the Vocations’ Director visits Parishes and schools, interacts with young men and gives them information about the Seminary, the priesthood and the procedure to follow when one is to Join the major Seminary (both minor and Major).

A follow-up made on the minor seminarians and young men in other schools who show interest in following the vocation to the priesthood. They are helped to make proper discernment and come up with an informed decision.

When the prospective candidates are in S.6, the recruitment process for the Major seminary begins. The candidates submit to the office their applications, all the necessary consultations are made; from the Small Christian Community to the parish level. Evaluations are also sought from the minor seminary or any other the school which the applicant attended.

Successful candidates are then admitted to Katigondo, Alokolum and St. Mbaaga Major Seminaries for their first phase of priestly training upon completing which they go for Pastoral Spiritual Year (PSY). Thereafter, those who successfully complete this year, are admitted to St Paul’s National Major Seminary,Kinyamasika, St. Mary’s Ggaba National Major Seminary and those of St. Mbaaga go back to the same seminary, since St. Mbaagatrains both in Philosophy and Theology.

Upon successfully completing Theology III, one is ordained to the diaconate and upon successfully completing year IV the deacon is ordained to the priesthood.

Throughout this period of formation, the Vocations Director and his assistant on behalf of the Ordinary of the diocese, journey with the seminarians, helping them to continually discern God’s will for their lives. This is done through organizing for them orientation courses, recollections, retreats and visiting them in their Seminaries, places of Pastoral Spiritual Year and homes and more so, through unceasingly interacting with the seminarians at a personal level.

Apart from the above, the Vocations’ office is also concerned with soliciting for the seminarians’ cost-sharing since they are expected to pay some tuition to the seminaries. Appeals are made to parish and individuals. We are indeed so grateful to all those who support this cause.
